Uniroyal's history dates back to 1892, when it was founded as the United States Rubber Company. The company officially rebranded as Uniroyal, Inc. in 1961 to unify its various product lines under a single name. The brand is now part of the Michelin Group in North America, Colombia, and Peru, while Continental AG owns the rights to the Uniroyal brand in other global regions.
Key Historical Milestones
1892: Formation as U.S. Rubber Company
Uniroyal's origins trace back to the United States Rubber Company, a major conglomerate formed by the merger of nine different rubber manufacturing firms in Naugatuck, Connecticut. Initially, the company produced a wide variety of rubber goods, from fire hoses and mechanical belts to footwear (including the creation of the iconic Keds sneaker in 1916).
Early 1900s: Entry into Automotive Tires
With the rise of the automobile industry, the company shifted its focus to tire manufacturing, producing its first rubber tire for bicycles in 1892 and soon after for cars.
1940s: War Efforts and Innovation
During World War II, U.S. Rubber facilities were converted to produce military goods, including munitions and propeller de-icing systems, earning the Army-Navy 'E' Award for production efforts.
1960s: Rebranding and Iconic Products
The 1960s were a pivotal decade.
1961: The company officially adopted the name Uniroyal, Inc. to create a unified brand identity.
1964: The famous Tiger Paw tire line was introduced and chosen as original equipment for the Ford Mustang. The company also created the massive, 80-foot-tall Uniroyal Giant Tire, which served as a Ferris wheel at the New York World's Fair before being moved to its permanent static display in Allen Park, Michigan.
1967: Uniroyal introduced the Lifesaver Radial tire, one of the first steel-belted radial tires made in the United States, noted for improved tread life and traction.
1980s-1990s: Mergers and Acquisitions
In 1986, Uniroyal's tire operations merged with B.F. Goodrich's tire business to form the Uniroyal-Goodrich Tire Company. In 1990, the entire Uniroyal-Goodrich operation was acquired by the French tire giant, the Michelin Group.
Today, the Uniroyal brand remains a trusted name under Michelin's ownership in North America, known for offering reliable performance and value with product lines like the Tiger Paw and Laredo.
